About Bicoca

Designer Christophe Mathieu injected a healthy amount of character into the Bicoca. The small table lamp is born with the optimism of brightening life and accompanying the good times, wherever you go. Made of polycarbonate, Bicoca begins with an overlay of basic geometric figures and features a tiltable shade to direct the light. Marset Bicoca Table Lamp White LightForm

A powerful magnet in the fixture’s base lets you affix it to metal surfaces, defying gravity, and an additional accessory allows it to attach to a sofa or the head of a bed to create a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere.

About Christophe Mathieu

“Lots of people tell me that they could not do my job because of the uncertainty, but this uncertainty is what attracts me.”

Thirty years ago, Christophe Mathieu made the unique transition from a professional competitive swimmer to the world of design. Today, based in Barcelona, Christophe is one of Marset’s veteran product designers.

Born in Hamburg and raised in the Canary Islands, Christophe moved to Barcelona in the mid-1980s to complete a degree in interior design. Shortly afterward, he moved to Milan, where he discovered industrial design, collaborating with architects Marco Zanuso Jr., Roberto Menghi, and Giulio Crespi, with whom he developed products for companies such as De Padova, Menphis and Driade. He also worked with industrial designer Sergio Coppola and the architect Antonio Zanuso to develop a prize-winning project for the Piazza della Republica. Christophe claims his time in Milan had a profound effect on him.

Christophe then accepted an offer by Dino Gavina to study industrial design in Bologna with Simon International, where he came into contact with influential products designed by Carlo Scarpa, Marcel Breuer, and Kazuhide Takahama. In 1989, he returned to Barcelona, where he began to collaborate with architects Alfredo Arribas and Eduard Samsó, and designer Javier Mariscal.

A restless man, Christophe seems to carry the traveling genes of his Belgian ancestors, who ventured to Spain in the 1960s. Even today, Christophe does not discount the possibility of one day leaving the world of design behind and pursuing something totally different.
