The Bauhaus sphere meets Art Deco

Lambert & Fils’ design team knew they had found the beginnings of their stunning new Laurent collection the moment they understood that they couldn’t beat purity of the sphere. With this understanding, they opted instead to embrace the iconic form by framing around it—thus opening up an entire collection of possibilities.

In keeping with its foundations, Montreal-based Lambert & Fils Studio drew from the past to create Laurent, its most contemporary collection to date. The initial inspiration was Marianne Brandt’s classic milk globe, designed at the Bauhaus. The Laurent Collection distills the milk globe to its essential relationship between circle and sphere. A series of thin forms complement the Laurent globes — forms that carve through space, moving between line, surface, and volume. These forms combine in endless patterns, making it possible for an installation of Laurent lamps to inhabit any space with subtlety and quiet strength.

This contemporary collection combines the classic Bauhaus milk globe with a series of sculptural forms that carve through space, moving between line, surface, and volume. The different models combine in endless patterns to inhabit any space with subtlety and quiet power. “Our research focused on the surface and the form. Here, the globe acts as the link between the two,” says Samuel Lambert, the studio’s founder and creative director. In keeping with its commitment to working with local, skilled trades, the team called upon the expertise of a Quebec glass blower to craft this latest piece. As with all Lambert & Fils collections, Laurent is designed, manufactured and assembled locally in Montreal.

The new Laurent collection from Montreal-based Lambert & Fils lighting design studio consists of hand-blown glass spheres enveloped by laser-cut metal frames. An adjustable suspension system of wires and anchors allows the pendant’s final form to vary, from a pure, minimalist orb to something more intricate and Art Deco. The different variations make it an apt lighting fixture for the home as well as for applications in the public realm where Laurent can really take on its fullest dimension through a rhythmic repetition.

Standard finishes include black and brass. New finishes available starting Jan. 1, 2017: chrome, green, blue, and burgundy. Custom colours (like white or turquoise) may soon be available. The wires can be angled or parallel. Lambert & Fils’ Laurent collection was first launched at ICFF in New York. Stay tuned for an excerpt of the conversation we had there with a member of Lambert & Fils’ design team. The Laurent recently enjoyed a European debut at Belgium’s Biennale Interieur in October.
